You Must Be Confused

Podcast + Today's Reading: John 5-7

This episode of Red in 30 centers on the theme of living in the layers versus living from the core. Opening with the song Deeper, the hosts connect music to the deeper call of Jesus’ red words: to stop living on the surface and to press into the true core of who we are in Him. Too often, life gets caught up in layers—clothing, food, possessions, careers, and even relationships. These things are not bad in themselves, but they become distractions when they are mistaken for the essence of life. The core, they remind us, is not outside—it’s within.

The conversation highlights how confusion always happens in the layers. Society and culture pull attention toward externals, creating endless noise that leaves people chasing the wrong priorities. Breaking down the word confuse, they describe it as being “with the fuse” or “mixed until indistinguishable.” The enemy’s goal, they explain, is to keep people in that state—caught up in information, distractions, and false priorities that make life feel muddled and unclear.

Jesus, by contrast, consistently brings clarity. In Matthew 16, He asks, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”—pushing His disciples past the confusion to recognize His true identity. That moment reveals the same call for us: to deny the surface-level self that clings to layers and instead find life by going deeper into God’s will. When we confuse careers, money, or even family with the essence of life, they become limitations. But when aligned with God, those same things can partner with us for His pleasure and purpose.

The episode ends with a challenge: don’t live life on the surface. If you never jump off, you’ll never break the surface. Ripples turn to waves only when you take the step to go deeper. At the bottom—past the noise, past the layers—is clarity, identity, and purpose. To live from the core is to live as sons and daughters of God, animated by His Spirit, and free from the confusion of the layers.
