DAY 27: I Am the Resurrection
Reading John 11-13
Today’s reading is John chapters 11 through 13.
In John 11, we see the great story of Jesus’ friend Lazarus being called from the dead.
Before that happens, Jesus has a conversation with Lazarus’ sister.
She says, “We know he’ll get up in the resurrection,” but Jesus normalizes it by saying:
“You’re waiting for a resurrection… but I am the resurrection.”
And remember—whatever Jesus says is who we are, because we are one with the Father as He is. So when He says “I am the resurrection,” He normalizes the process and the action that Lazarus actually can come back from the dead.
And Lazarus does.
Then we move into John 12, and there’s an amazing paradox or irony:
Jesus begins to be prepared for His own death.
When the woman pours the precious ointment on Him, she’s preparing Him for His burial— preparing Him for the time when He will give His life.
Then He says:
“You have to lose your life to find it.”
In other words, in order to be immune from your life being taken or murdered,
the way to do that is to give your life.
The same way Jesus gave life back to Lazarus, that act of resurrection, He now mirrors by giving His own life.
Then in John 13, Jesus takes the time to have supper—The Last Supper.
And at one point, He actually washes the feet of His disciples.
This is one of the most humble things He could do. Even though He was the Master He served them.
This normalization of humility proved to be a catalyst of discernment, because through it,
He was able to recognize the one who would betray Him—Judas.
